The City of Durango is seeking a Building Official responsible for overseeing the daily operations of building permitting. In this management position, you will play a critical role in the overall operation of the Community Development Department and serve as the City’s primary technical expert on building safety.

You will guide other building and land use inspectors, plan reviewers, and building permitting technicians in their work, helping your team deliver high-quality services to the Durango community. You’ll also oversee interactions with residents, business owners, architects, contractors, and other professionals, ensuring they receive prompt, accurate, and professional assistance that aligns with our commitment to consistency, predictability, and timeliness.

What You’ll Do in This Role:

  • Oversee the building permit process, including customer service, application intake, plan reviews, issuing permits, inspections, and enforcing building codes.
  • Review building plans and check for compliance with codes, ordinances, and regulations.
  • Inspect residential and commercial buildings during construction and remodeling, including building, plumbing, and mechanical inspections.
  • Manage staff involved in building inspections and plan checks.
  • Stay up to date on current laws and code requirements; recommend policy, code updates, and procedural modifications accordingly.
  • Issue violation notices and maintain records for possible legal actions.
  • Provide customer service and assistance to the public; confer with architects, contractors, and builders.
  • Prepare reports, forms, and correspondence related to inspections and enforcement.
  • Issue and maintain stop work notice files for non-conforming or unpermitted building activity.

You Have:

  • A bachelor’s degree with major coursework in structural engineering, architecture, or a related field.
  • Five years of increasingly responsible construction experience, including familiarity with building, plumbing, and mechanical construction.
  • Three years working as a code official for a municipality or other building code agency.
  • Knowledge of building codes, zoning ordinances, and related regulations, including the 2018 International Building, Plumbing, and Mechanical Codes.
  • Skill in interpreting and explaining building codes, ordinances, and regulations.
  • Commitment to accepted safety standards and construction practices for commercial and residential buildings.
  • Ability to plan, assign, and supervise the work of departmental employees.
  • Strong communication and public relation skills.
