The City of Durango’s Parks & Recreation Department is hiring a Recreation Supervisor to lead and enhance programming at the Durango Community Recreation Center. In this role, you’ll design, implement, manage, and budget for a variety of activities, including licensed and unlicensed childcare, fitness classes, and general recreation.
Your primary focus will be managing our Gametime childcare program, creating a safe, enriching environment for children aged 5-15. You’ll develop engaging activities like games, arts and crafts, and swimming while ensuring full compliance with licensed childcare regulations. Leading a dedicated team of part-time and full-time staff, you’ll oversee hiring, training, and daily operations.
You’ll also supervise our fitness programming, which features 50+ weekly classes, personal training, and climbing wall activities. With your creativity and leadership, you’ll plan, evaluate, and promote programs that inspire and meet the needs of our diverse community.
What You’ll Do in This Role:
Gametime Childcare Program:
- Oversee the Gametime childcare program, ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal childcare licensing requirements.
- Manage child-to-staff ratios, maintain staff and child files, and oversee safety protocols.
- Prepare staff, facilities, and program documentation for health, fire, and licensing inspections.
- Provide a safe, nurturing environment for children and positive interactions with parents, participants, and staff.
- Recruit, hire, train, and supervise full-time and part-time childcare staff.
Fitness Programming:
- Supervise the Recreation Center’s fitness programming, including 50+ weekly classes, personal training, climbing wall, and associated staff.
- Recruit, hire, and oversee fitness instructors and personal trainers.
- Develop, evaluate, and enhance fitness programs to meet community needs and interests.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Manage budgets, monitor expenditures, and implement strategies to enhance customer satisfaction for fitness, climbing wall, Gametime, and other Recreation Center programs.
- Prepare reports and analyze program effectiveness, cost recovery, and recommended fees.
- Develop and implement policies, procedures, and orientation materials for recreation programs and staff.
- Promote Recreation Center programs through marketing campaigns, digital advertising, and community outreach.
- Serve as “Manager on Duty” on a rotational basis, addressing customer inquiries and maintaining positive public relations.
You Have:
- A bachelor’s degree with major coursework in recreation, physical education, early childhood development, leisure studies, sociology, communications, or a related field.
- Four years of progressively responsible experience in recreation services.
- A valid state driver’s license.
- Leadership and supervisory skills, including experience in selecting, training, and developing a high-performing team.
- Experience designing, developing, and implementing recreation programs.
- Skill in collecting, analyzing, and using data to make informed decisions about department programs and budgets.
- Ability to obtain and maintain valid CPR/AED and First Aid Certification.
- Park and Recreation Professional Certification (CPRP) preferred.
