The Assistant County Attorney performs a wide variety of professional duties under the direction of supervising attorneys, including providing legal advice and services that may be provided to the Board of County Commissioners, County departments, and/or boards, authorities, and commissions of the County; conducting legal research; preparing memoranda, contracts, briefs and other legal documents; rendering legal opinions; responding to requests for public records, and representing the County in litigation

Hours and Location: This is a full-time position. The work schedule is Monday โ€“ Friday and work hours are determined by need but generally fall between 8:00am โ€“ 5:00 pm. Flexible work arrangements may be available upon a demonstrated ability to meet job expectations.ย 

The Attorney’s Office is adjacent to the Eagle County Government Building, located at 500 Broadway, Eagle, CO 81631. This position will be required to attend in-person hearings, work sessions and meetings, including attendance at other Eagle County locations as necessary. Under FLSA guidelines, this position is exempt (not eligible for overtime).ย

Here are some of the key responsibilities:

  • Advises county staff and officials on legal matters.
  • Researches legal issues and prepares legal documents.
  • Represents the Board of Equalization in tax appeals.
  • Drafts and reviews contracts, resolutions, and other legal documents.
  • Provides legal guidance on development, real estate, land use, and planning matters.
  • Investigates claims and lawsuits involving the county.
  • Represents the county in court and administrative proceedings.
  • Responds to requests for public records.
  • Maintains legal knowledge through training and professional development.

Qualifications:

Minimum Education (Indicate minimum education or degree required):

  • JD from an ABA-accredited law school.

Minimum Work Experience and Qualifications (Indicate minimum years of job experience, skills or abilities required for the job):

  • Three (3) years in the practice of law with broad contract, litigation, and real estate experience.

Preferred Work Experience and Qualifications (Indicate preferred years of job experience, skills or abilities):

  • Background in local government with a focus on transactional matters, administrative law, and representation of and providing legal advice to boards and commissions.
