The Equipment Operator I will help with the day to day operations of the Recycling Center and the mechanical maintenance of processing equipment at the Eagle County Solid Waste and Recycling Center in Wolcott. This position also includes operating heavy equipment associated with Landfill procedures at the Eagle County Landfill.

$2500 Bonus Information: $1000 sign-on bonus, paid out on employee’s first paycheck & up to $1500 retention bonus, paid out after 6 months of employment, based on attendance and performance.

Schedule: Tuesday through Friday (8a-5p) and Saturday (7a-3:30p)

Essential Functions:

  • Operates a small rubber tire loader, multi-use hook truck and forklift. 
  • Performs inspections and maintenance of baler, wire tie system, optical sorter and compressor equipment
  • Cleans, inspects and maintains conveyor belt lines.
  • Operates heavy equipment associated with landfill operations.
  • Clearly communicates with co-workers and supervisors regarding status of operating equipment and potential problems discovered through the normal course of cleaning and/or maintenance.
  • Snow removal.
  • Observes safety and security procedures, uses equipment and materials safely and reports potentially unsafe conditions.
  • Serves the community by demonstrating Eagle County Government mission and core values and following relevant policies and procedures. 
  • Other tasks as assigned.

Qualifications:

Experience, Education, Licenses and Certifications:

  • Driver’s license and satisfactory motor vehicle record required
  • Valid Class B Colorado Commercial Driver’s License or ability to obtain within one (1) year of employment.
  • One (1) year experience operating light construction equipment preferred or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • May be required to obtain additional certifications depending on area of assignment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of machinery and equipment associated with recycling operations
  • Ability to operate machinery and equipment associated with recycle MRF operations and learn to use machinery or equipment in order to perform more advanced tasks.
  • Ability to matching equipment operation to situation
  • Mechanically inclined; must demonstrate proven mechanical skills and be willing to learn new mechanical systems. 
  • Must be willing and able to understand, comprehend and perform mechanical operational direction from MRF Supervisor. 
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow written and verbal instruction in order to operate machinery and other equipment.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with coworkers and supervisors frequently about equipment, maintenance and operations
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to be courteous of fellow employees, citizens, and businesses while performing job duties.
  • Basic computer skills
  • Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail.
  • Must be willing to work in hot and cold environments. 
  • Ability to lift and carry moderately heavy materials, supplies, and equipment (25-50 lbs.) frequently. Lift heavy materials, supplies and equipment (50-100 lbs.) occasionally.
  • Work requires continuous walking, stooping, standing, and some climbing.
  • Ability to use tools and equipment that requires a high degree of dexterity.
  • This position requires self-motivation and ability to work alone with all activities working in a safe and efficient manner.

Work Environment:

  • Frequent exposure to dirt, dust, extremes of temperature, and noxious fumes and odors; potential exposure to hazardous materials; exposed to hazards associated with equipment, machinery, and ungraded terrain at construction sites and close proximity to moving vehicles. May spend a small amount of time in landfill office operating truck scale.
