We are looking for a Utility Locator to join our Field Operations team. You will join a team of experts to maintain the District’s extensive network of underground assets in our unique distribution and collection system. This is an exciting opportunity for a new or experienced Locator looking to branch into the water and wastewater industry. The ideal candidate is mechanically inclined and desires to contribute positively to the team.

The Day-to-Day

  • Interpret utility maps, as-built civil engineering drawings, GIS information, and various locating equipment to locate our assets and underground utility lines.
  • Use stakes, flags, and/or paint to mark the location of underground utilities.
  • Gather GIS Data in the field utilizing handheld Trimble unit or other GPS enabled devices.
  • Communicate with (including site visits) contractors to ensure protection of underground facilities.
  • Submit positive response tickets to Colorado 811.
  • Create and complete cwork orders daily using GIS and CityWorks.
  • Prepare various reports, forms, photos, and memos to document work orders, issues encountered, and resolutions. Verify field information and notify relevant departments regarding updates and corrections.
  • Investigate and prepare detailed written documentation following excavations that result in damage to underground utilities.

The duties of this position will vary by season and the needs of the Field Operations department. When Locating duties are not necessary, you will join the team in other duties pertaining to the repair and maintenance of the water distribution and wastewater collection system.

Qualifications & Competencies

  • High school diploma or GED; or an equivalent combination of education and experience to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
  • Knowledge of standard operating procedures of the Colorado 811 Tier 1 system preferred.
  • Colorado Distribution and Collection Licenses preferred. Must be able to obtain Colorado Distribution I and Collection I certifications within one year of start date. All Certifications and Licenses must be kept current.
  • Must possess a valid Colorado Driver’s license and be insurable under District’s standards. Must obtain a class “B” Commercial Driver’s License or higher within two years of employment.
  • Must be willing to occasionally work overtime, holidays, weekends and be on call. Field Operators are required to be on call in one-week segments once every 6-8 weeks with a one-hour response time.
  • Proven customer service skills and the ability to work productively with minimal direct supervision. Excellent communications skills (both written and verbal) are essential. This position works closely with consumers, contractors, developers, and other District departments.
  • Must obtain CPR/First Aid Certification within the first year of employment.
  • Must be 18 years or older.

Salary Range

This role will be hired into one of three levels within the Field Operations team. Starting pay depends on qualifications but generally falls within the minimum and mid-point of the pay range. Pay range for each level are as follows:

  • Field Operator I: $26.41 – $36.97
  • Field Operator II: $29.12 – $40.77 (3-6 years of Locating experience)
  • Field Operator III: $32.10 – $44.94 (6+ years of Locating experience)

Schedule

The regular schedule for this position will be 40 hours a week, Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. and will be responsible for occasional on-call shifts.
