The Golf Course Superintendent reports directly to the Director of Golf and is responsible for the grounds maintenance and repair of the Golf Course and surrounding areas.  Develops long and short-term objectives related to the maintenance of the golf course, coordinates and directs employees of golf course maintenance department.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

·          Develop objectives related to the effective maintenance and repair of the golf course.

·          Hire, orient, train, direct, motivate, evaluate, and discipline all assigned staff and oversee work schedules in accordance with Resort policies.

·          Develop and recommend annual operating budget and capital improvement budget for assigned area of responsibility; monitor and control budgets using computerized financial accounting systems.

·          Maintain current knowledge, implement and enforce Resort policies, procedures, rules and regulations.

·          Develop objectives related to the effective maintenance and repair of the golf course.  Interpret and enforce the policies, rules and regulations of the General Manager and Board of Directors.

·          Develop an effective work schedule and system to plan and measure the results of work performed.  Assure work is accomplished according to schedule.

·          Prepare and implement long range (5 year) and annual course improvement plans.

·          Coordinate the planning and engineering of golf course capital improvements by reviewing plans, specifications, and bids; inspects golf course during renovations.

·          Inspect the condition of the golf course in the field assuring the golf course is properly maintained and repaired.  Note deficiencies and follow through to correct those conditions.

·          Maintain a competent, motivated work force, with particular emphasis at the first line level, by training, developing and motivating subordinates.

·          Maintain golf course, Toro OSMAC irrigation system & SITE PRO 2000 computerized watering system. 

·          Respond in a timely, meaningful way to member, guest and public concerns and complaints about the maintenance of the golf course and effectively resolves the concerns.

·          Assure the prompt identification of turf and tree diseases and insect infestation and the proper, legal application of herbicides or pesticides to effectively eradicate the problems.  Comply with all regulation regarding the purchase, storage, and application of hazardous chemicals.

·          Assure golf course turf is uniformly green through the development of an effective fertilizer program, routine and regular de-thatching, and the effective preventative and corrective maintenance of golf course irrigation.

·          Assure that the grounds maintenance of other Resort properties creates a pleasing and safe environment for members and guests.

·          Work closely with the Director of Golf, 1st Assistant Golf Pro, Men’s and Women’s Golf Clubs, and others, for the betterment of the course, improvement of playing conditions, and enjoyment of golfing.

·          Ensure that Resort personnel (including contractors), players and guests adhere to Resort policies and regulations.

·          Work with the Director of Golf and Director of Food and Beverage to ensure quality service to patrons.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university and two years related experience and/or training in turf grass management, agronomy, or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must have understanding of Microsoft Office computer systems. Certified Golf Course Superintendent desirable.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents.  Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints.  Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style.  Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Requires current Pesticide Applicator’s License.  Requires possession of valid Class C Driver License with a driving record meeting the minimum standards required by Resort insurance carrier.  Requires current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid certifications

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Manages one subordinate supervisor (the Assistant Golf Course Superintendent), who supervises a total of 26 employees.  Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of this unit.  Also, directly supervises 26 non-supervisory employees.  Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
