Building Inspector

Position Summary:  Under general supervision from the Building Official, the Building Inspector performs highly skilled work in the inspection and enforcement of building, plumbing, energy, and mechanical codes as well as local ordinances.  Duties include performing residential and commercial plan review, when necessary, as determined by the Building Official.  Provides respectful, courteous, and customer-friendly inspection services to residents, property owners, and the building community while ensuring the health, safety, and welfare of the general public

It is essential that the Building Inspector be customer service oriented and understand the importance of balancing public safety and win-win solutions for the community. The position demands a strong interaction with the development and construction community and a genuine desire to establish and foster professional relationships with our internal and external customers. Position placement at a I or II level will depend on experience, education, and certifications.

Building Inspector I, Requirements and Hiring Pay Range:  $61,667 – $74,000 annually.  This position requires 2-3 years of experience and the ability to obtain 2 ICC certifications within 2-3 years of employment.  The pay range maximum is $86,333 annually.  A pay rate above the hiring range may be considered based on the candidate’s qualifications, certifications, and experience.

Building Inspector II, Requirements and Hiring Pay Range:  $69,600 – $87,000 annually. This position requires 5+ years of experience and the ability to obtain 3 ICC certifications within 2 years of employment.  The pay range maximum is $100,000 annually.  A pay rate above the hiring range may be considered based on the candidate’s qualifications, certifications, and experience.

Required Experience, Education and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture, Construction Management, Engineering, or related field preferred
  •  2-5 years responsible experience in residential or commercial construction.  Preference given for those with experience performing municipal building inspections or experience working under a licensed electrical contractor or plumbing contractor may be considered  Certifications Preferred:
    • ICC certified energy inspector
    • ICC certified building inspector
    • ICC certified plumbing
    • ICC certified mechanical inspector
  •     Valid State Driver’s License and Satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record (MVR)
  •     Must successfully pass a criminal and motor vehicle background check
  •     Must be proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Email
  •     Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work:

  • This is a full-time position with health insurance benefits. Normal days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • May be requested to attend evening committee meetings, special work sessions, and may assist with some evening and weekend events.
