Under general direction, the Sustainability and Grant Administrator is responsible for creating and promoting environmental and economic sustainability across the Town and community. This includes assisting in implementing the Town’s Climate Action Plan, associated initiatives, and performance tracking. The position will maximize funding potential by managing and administering grant applications, compliance, and financial reporting processes for all Town departments. This position is 60% project execution and 40% administrative work.

Sustainability Administration
- Act as a resource for Town staff, assisting and encouraging a sustainability-focused culture; work with Town staff to progress the Town’s goal of carbon neutrality by supporting environmental initiatives through participation, promotion, and distribution of accurate information.
- Assist in the implementation of the adopted Climate Action Plan to enhance Town operations and maximize public incentives to reduce negative environmental impact.
- Assist with the management of all current Town incentive programs and green grants.
- Assist with greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory data collection and tracking for the Town government and community; utilize current database procedures to update emissions inventory and manage climate impact assessments, monitor modeling and seek reduction opportunities; collaborate with other jurisdictions to share and analyze data; input data into ICLI, produce and present a GHG reduction report every three years.
Public Outreach & Communication
- Serve as community sustainability liaison; help businesses and residents achieve efficiency goals by promoting efficient operational practices which boost productivity and improve long-term cash flow prospects.
- Assist with outreach to Town staff and the public about sustainability efforts and successes through monthly newsletter.
- Work with the Communications team to create strategies for program adoption and public engagement.
- Ensure that educational campaigns and programs align with regional partners, including San Miguel Power Association, Black Hills Energy, Town of Mountain Village, San Miguel County, Telluride Ski and Golf, and others as needed.
Grant Administration
- Primary grant writer for the Town; research and recommend grant opportunities that support the achievement of the Town’s goals and objectives; communicate opportunities to relevant department heads.
- Gather information from all Town departments about all project and funding needs; track projects in a grant database and associate projects with potential sources of funding.
- Manage the grant writing process; produce well-written, compelling applications and prioritize available grant opportunities.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science and Resource Management, Climate Science, Energy, Physical Science, or related field AND two years of experience in grant writing, energy management, or climate sustainability; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Local government and nonprofit experience encouraged. A demonstrated track record of successful efficiencies program implementation at the non-profit or local government level encouraged; valid driver’s license.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required
Knowledge of: Experience with sustainability planning, public speaking, and project execution; Microsoft Office suite, social media, and print media; ability to conduct research and scientific analysis on environmental/sustainability data and programs; ability to consult and provide recommendations to all Town departments to encourage sustainable practices; ability to lead incentive program development and execution involving external partners; ability to craft and present policy recommendations to elected officials; ability to manage and administer grant applications, compliance, and financial reporting processes.
Skill in: Strong presentation, writing, and editing skills; public speaking; effective verbal and written communication skills; assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects, and demands; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers, community partners, and the public.
Environmental Factors
Work is performed primarily in a standard office environment and in and around the Town’s buildings and facilities. The employee will be required to travel within Town limits.
Physical Factors
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is often required to sit for extended periods of time; may occasionally be required to lift and/or move items weighing up to 20 pounds.
