The Vail Valley Mountain Trails Alliance (VVMTA) is excited to offer a full-time Trail Stewardship Coordinator (TSC) position. The Trail Stewardship Coordinator will focus on program execution of trail stewardship and volunteer programming and projects. A typical work week includes being in the field, recruiting, scheduling and managing volunteers, and engagement through the Adopt A Trail (AAT), Trail Ambassador (TA), and Youth Trail Stewards (YTS) programs.
POSITION DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Volunteer Trail Maintenance Projects:
- Lead supervised trail work days with Adopt A Trail teams and other volunteer groups to complete trail work projects
- Identify, support, and participate in volunteer trail project events including, but not limited to, VVMTA Volunteer Trail Crew, VVMTA Ladies Trail Crew, and partner volunteer trail/stewardship initiatives & projects
- Identify and inventory trail maintenance projects across trails located in Eagle County and document in an organized database
- Create, execute, and manage an inventory of volunteer trail projects through site visits and data collection
- Strategize and plan for the future completion of trail projects
- Manage volunteer tool sheds, inventory, equipment, and identify equipment, materials, signage, and tool needs
- Manage and order signs, supplies, tools and other materials as needed to support volunteer projects in coordination with partners, land managers, and VVMTA staff
- Monitor and evaluate volunteer trail projects through maintenance logs
- Collaborate with Program Manager on a regular basis and as directed by Executive Director
- Provide insight, feedback, and innovative opportunities to Program Manager to improve and secure volunteer participation
- With Program Manager, co-design and execute volunteer training initiatives such as AAT team leader training, TA trainings, and volunteer trail crew leader trainings
Trail Ambassador Program:
- Collaborate with the Program Manager to execute the Trail Ambassador program in the field/at trailheads
- Expected at seasonally closed trailheads from December through April, 10-20 hours per week providing education to trail users on seasonal wildlife closures, leash laws, Leave No Trace principles, and responsible recreation practices
- Expected at seasonally closed and open trailheads from May through September, 4-8 hours per week providing education to trail users on seasonal wildlife closures, leash laws, Leave No Trace principles, and responsible recreation practices
- Complete logs to evaluate program impact
With support from Program Manager, coordinate and schedule seasonal full-time Trail Ambassadors - With support from Program Manager, manage Trail Ambassador program operations including vehicles, equipment, supplies & materials, etc.
Youth Trail Stewards:
- Lead youth programming events including trail work projects and educational classroom events
- Collaborate with Program Manager to create programming and curriculum for youth programming
Communication & Outreach:
- Frequently communicate with public about Leave No Trace principles, responsible recreation, trail etiquette, seasonal wildlife closures, and general recreation information
- Collaborate regularly with USFS, other land managers, VVMTA staff, and volunteers
- Manage rewards and recognition for volunteers including swag and incentives
- Coordinate and communicate with volunteers, land managers, and partners to provide information, training, and motivation
Document trail work with detailed before and after photos - Convey to all volunteers and participants the importance of our stewardship programs in accordance with the VVMTA’s goals and objectives
Other Duties:
- Familiarization of program-specific grant-funded projects, assist in achieving project objectives, and contribute to the preparation and submission of grant reports
- Represent the VVMTA, its partners, and local land managers in a respectful and competent manner
- Participate in organizational-wide teams, projects and initiatives that support the work of the organization’s goals
- Actively fosters an inclusive work environment, promoting equity and belonging for marginalized populations within the organization and the communities we serve.
- Ability to work in an office environment and perform administrative tasks
