Position Overview:

This fulltime year-round position will work with the Sustainability Programs Department at Walking Mountains to fulfill the goals of the Actively Green Sustainable Business Training, Certification and Engagement Program. This position supports businesses with implementation of sustainability best-practices, guides employees through utilizing the Sustainable Business Trail Map, assists in attaining eco-certification using the sustainability management system database, as well as provides engagement opportunities and recommendations for improvement relevant to the local business community. The purpose of this position is to continue to provide a meaningful and valuable business program focused on recruitment and retention of engaged and enrolled businesses.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Actively Green Sustainable Business Program

·Provide outreach throughout Eagle County, tracking interactions for reporting purposes

·Recruit local businesses to participate in programmatic workshop and/or training sessions, engage with improvement of sustainable practices by utilizing the Trail Map and retain current participating businesses

·Manage the sustainable business program, including development and facilitation of regular educational training and workshop sessions; compilation and development of best practice tools and resources specific to the Eagle Valley; utilization of the Travel Life Sustainability Management System; and evolution of the Trail Map to meet the local business community’s needs

·Troubleshoot and help create sustainable business solutions and best practices

·Train business staff to use the Travel Life sustainability management system database

·Coordinate and schedule regular meetings and visits to train, coach and assist business staff with certification and improvement of sustainability in their businesses

·Coach businesses on Actively Green Certification criteria compliance and perform pre-audits

·Track businesses’ progress, as well as regular interaction with each business, using Salesforce and RegFox

·Provide quarterly and annual reports, as well as suggestions for adapting and improving the Actively Green Program

Mountain IDEAL – Sustainable Destination Initiative

·Assist with Sustainable Destination initiatives as necessary, including the Vail Destination Certification Project and the Mountain IDEAL GSTC-“recognized” standard

·Support Town of Vail in maintaining Sustainable Destination status

·Attend and contribute to Sustainable Destination Stewardship Council and Sustainable Destination Steering Committee meetings

·Collaborate with Walking Mountains SP staff to enhance the Mountain IDEAL standard as the initiative grows

·Stay informed with up-to-date knowledge on global destination and tourism industry sustainability certification standards

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

Program Coordination and Administration

· Provide regular updates to the Sustainability Programs Director to communicate activities and results

·Manage annual program budget

·Compile and document outcomes and results of the Actively Green business network for quarterly and annual reports to funding partners, including collective impact of Actively Green Certified businesses

·Seek and apply for a variety of grants to provide benefits for participating businesses; with support from the development staff

Instruction and Professional Development

·Develop and implement annual Actively Green Program calendar

·Act as a professional representative of Walking Mountains when providing instruction and training

·Plan, prepare and teach other sustainability programs as needed or assigned

·Attend and represent the program at conferences, workshops, trainings and events relevant to sustainable business and sustainability

Personnel Management

·Supervise and mentor sustainability interns; enforce responsibilities and expectations for the internship position as needed

·Assist in training and evaluating seasonal interns involved with sustainability programs

Operations and Facilities

·Assist with on-going facility operations and organizational special events as needed

·Act in compliance with the Walking Mountains Science Center Employee Handbook

·Manage Actively Green and Colorado Green Business Network Certifications for Walking Mountains Science Center’s Avon Tang Campus

·Co-chair, manage and lead ongoing action plans, activities and initiatives of Walking Mountains Science Center’s Green Team Committee

Communication/ Marketing

·Provide programmatic content for Walking Mountains publications and website specific to the Actively Green Sustainable Business Program as needed

·Coordinate program calendars with other Walking Mountains staff for Actively Green program and event promotion

·Work with Marketing staff to develop and implement annual marketing plan for Actively Green Program

·Maintain regular communication and outreach with program participants



·Experience implementing sustainability initiatives, sustainable business best practices, outreach programming, and communication with professionals

·Bachelor’s degree in sustainability or a related field

·Professional demeanor to represent Walking Mountains and the sustainable business community

·Excellent oral and written communication skills and willingness to communicate with a variety of audiences

·Excellent organizational skills to track progress and schedule work efficiently and effectively

· An independently-driven team player who is positive, flexible and friendly

·Ability to effectively work on diverse teams or with a diverse range of people

·Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion


·Experience in sales is desirable

·Bilingual in English and Spanish

·Valid driver’s license and ability to drive to locations in the Eagle Valley

·Ability to carry heavy equipment up to 50 lbs

·Experience in using computers and software including MS Office

·Ability to work variable hours as needed

Work Environment:

The Sustainability Programs Coordinator works in a variety of settings, but primarily indoors. The work environment is predominantly located on-site at the Borgen-Precourt Center for Sustainability in an open office environment. The Sustainability Coordinator will also spend a significant portion of time out in the community meeting with various businesses and a small amount of time outdoors conducting door to door outreach. Other settings include classroom space (both on and off-site) for leading trainings and workshops and occasionally offsite locations for program promotion.
