The future of employment in the mountains

Colorado – Spring 2017– Mountain Careers has been hard at work this winter to ensure that we are a useful resource and forming partnerships to help shape the future of work in the mountains. Our goal is to be on the front lines of the job hunt and the hiring process, providing helpful advice, new contacts and data along the way.

Who lives in the mountains and what inspires their career choices?

How can we reach these professionals and connect them with meaningful opportunities?

How can we help employers and communities attract and retain the best talent?

These are the questions we’ve been asking ourselves this spring. Mountain Careers is mixing things up and discovering new ways to collaborate.

“These days making connections is one of the best ways to find your next opportunity so we thought we would do the networking for our 3,000 subscribers”, says the founder of Mountain Careers.

Where did we start? In February we took a road trip to Telluride, CO for the inaugural Mountain Venture Summit which gathered 120 entrepreneurs and leaders from the west (think towns like Mammoth, Tahoe, Aspen, Jackson, Breckenridge) to discuss how to create more jobs, encourage innovation, and promote diversity in our respective mountain towns.  Mountain Careers was thankful to participate as towns shared bold and audacious goals like creating “100 jobs that pay 100K” within the next few years. Next stop for Mountain Careers was COILSx (Colorado Outdoor Industry Leadership Summit) in Breckenridge. COILSx Mountain Event asked how may we make Summit County, Eagle County, and Grand County better places to work and live, alongside conservation efforts. These events really cultivate professionals, “COILS convinced me that there are passionate and innovative people in the mountains and it’s worth staying here,” said Haley Littleton, a writing/editing professional based in Dillon.

At Mountain Careers, we’re proud of the work we do and the stories that come from it.  When our friend Cat Olson landed a new job she wrote “I thought I would have to move out of the mountains to advance my career. Mountain Careers helped me to find a great job with an amazing organization, allowing me to stay in the mountains that I love so much” and the Vail Valley Partnership shared that they had “a lot of interest [for our job opening], and a bunch of it from Mountain Careers. Kudos to you on the site – it’s driving awareness.” The future of work in the mountains is growing and Mountain Careers is excited to be on the front lines.

We love to connect and collaborate.  Have an idea? Please reach out and share your story with us!
