This is possibly the best position in the City of Durango! The Community Events Supervisor position is a great combination of inside desk work, outside event work, and invigorating meetings where new ideas and solutions come to light. This position provides a key connection between event organizers and the permitting and support that the City of Durango provides.
The Community Events division does the following:
- Creates and implements in-house events (for example 4th of July).
- Permits events on City property.
- Permits banners for Main Ave and Santa Rita.
- Creates and implements Temporary Traffic Control Plans for events.
- Maintains and rents a fleet of equipment for use at events.
- Provides technical assistance to the event organizers.
- Coordinates activities with other affected City departments and outside agencies.
What You’ll Do in This Role:
Administrative Work (40% of the role)
- Coordinate all aspects of Community Events permitting (internal and external).
- Meet with Park Permit and Special Activity Permit applicants to ensure all City Code of Ordinances and regulations required for their event are understood and complied with.
- Review all permits with Police, Durango Fire Protection District, City Operations and other City departments to ensure proper safety procedures are met.
- Issue Park and Special Activity Permits after all stipulations and conditions have been complied with, and the required approvals have been obtained.
- Collect fees for event permits.
- Oversee overhead Banner Permit program, including approval and issuance of permits and collection of fees. Schedule banner hanging and review banner construction/wording.
- Participate in the preparation and administration of the events budget.
- Attend and participate in professional meetings; stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of public safety and event management.
Field Work (60% of the role)
- Provide field supervision of permitted events for proper traffic control, barricade, and traffic warning sign placement, setup and teardown of events (often involves early mornings, late nights, and weekends).
- Drive a Community Event truck and trailers (up to 35 feet long).
- Load, set up, move, and tear down event equipment.
- Document City resources utilized for each event.
- Recruit, hire, and train part-time and seasonal staff to provide set-up for Special Events.
- Provide assistance and directions to the public.
- Coordinate the work of Community Event volunteers.
- Assist with development and implementation of City Events.
- Perform crowd management and traffic control at special events.
- Track, maintain, and repair Community Events equipment.
You Have:
- A bachelor’s degree in event planning, community development, hospitality management, marketing, public relations, communications, or a related field.
- Four years of progressively responsible event management experience, including at least one year in a supervisory role; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- A valid state driver’s license and CPR/AED and First Aid certification (or the ability to obtain within 90 days of employment).
- Knowledge of best practices, materials, and methods for designing and implementing community events, with a focus on engaging and serving diverse populations.
- A strong commitment to safety and proficiency in operating and maintaining event-related tools, equipment, and trailers.
- Experience in selecting, supervising, training, and evaluating staff using effective leadership, coaching, and team development strategies.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interpret and convey technical information, procedures, and documents clearly.
- Skill in collecting, analyzing, and reporting data to support program evaluation and decision-making.
- The ability to work independently with strong follow-through and timely communication; availability to work flexible hours, including rotational on-call shifts.
- Physical capability to perform a variety of active work ranging from light to heavy physical activity. This position regularly lifts up to 50 to 60 pounds.
