The Town of Telluride is hiring a Wastewater Lead Operator. Under the general direction of the Division Manager, this position serves as the Operator in Responsible Charge directly responsible for all wastewater treatment plant operations. This includes overseeing, managing, supervising, and coordinating all activities including construction, maintenance, and operations. This position also acts as a water treatment operator.   • Responsible for operational decisions; listed and recognized by the State of Colorado as the Wastewater Site-Specific Operator in Responsible Charge
  • Assists in overseeing the operation and maintenance of facilities to meet all applicable regulatory requirements and in accordance with design criteria
  • Assists in developing and implementing techniques and methods of process control to improve plant efficiency

Distribution Water System

  •  Maintains raw water line from Stillwell Tunnel to plant, upper pond, Mill Creek Head Gate
  •  Reads residential and commercial water meters and repairs meters and cross connection control devices

Supervision

  • Assists Division Manager in planning, organizing, motivating, directing, and reviewing work of plant operators, lab technicians, maintenance, and drivers
  • Assist in overseeing contractors hired to work on plant components and future construction
  • Trains plant operators, lab technicians, maintenance, and drivers on water and wastewater system tasks

Administrative

  • Assists with preparation of annual plant budget including projecting upcoming capital project needs
  • Completes monthly, quarterly, and annual reports for government entities
  • Assists with the implementation of plant safety program; conducts safety trainings

Minimum Qualifications High School diploma, or any equivalent, and 3 years relevant experience with at least 1 year of supervisory experience; valid driver’s license. State of Colorado Class A Wastewater Treatment Certificate, or ability to obtain within 6 months. Ability to obtain State of Colorado Class D Water Treatment Certification within 6 months. CPR and First Aid training are strongly preferred. Ongoing participation in Confined Spaces training. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required Knowledge of: Methods, policies, materials, tools, and equipment used in the operation, maintenance, inspection, repair, and installation of wastewater treatment plant components. Knowledge of mechanical, biological, and chemical processes involved in the operation of a wastewater plant. Skill in: Operating and maintaining equipment used in the wastewater treatment process. Ability to understand and interpret engineering specifications and drawings pertaining to plant expansions and improvements, performing, analyzing, and interpreting laboratory tests for purposes of making operational adjustments and completing required reporting. Recognizing equipment and process problems and needed repairs. Working with raw sewage and chemicals using proper protective equipment and knowledge of occupational hazards and corresponding safety measures. Communicating effectively while planning, directing, and supervising the work of subordinate staff. Environmental Factors Work is primarily performed in water wastewater plants and facilities with raw sewage, chemicals, and noxious odors, in confined spaces and at heights. Work is often performed outdoors in adverse weather. On-call requirements include the ability to respond to emergency or abnormal facility situations outside of normal work hours. Physical Factors The ability to sustain heavy physical exertion, move, and lift heavy objects regularly and up to 100 lbs. on occasion is required. Salary Full-Time Year-Round Position.
