The City of Durango’s Engineering Division is looking for an Engineering Inspector to oversee field inspections and approve public improvement construction projects.

From the in-office review of development plans and specifications to on-site verifications, you’ll be responsible for ensuring work is performed safely and in compliance with local and state requirements. You’ll collect required tests, perform as-built surveys, and record all field inspections for a permanent project record. You will represent the department when collaborating with contractors, developers, architects, engineers, City staff, and the public. Under the guidance of the Senior Engineering Inspector, you’ll carry out diverse technical engineering tasks within your designated area.

*Note: This is a seasonal position with the possibility of transitioning to full-time based on performance and organization needs.

 

What You’ll Do in This Role: 

  • Conduct site inspections of public improvements, including water mains, sanitary sewer mains, storm drains, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, and roads.
  • Ensure compliance with approved design drawings and local and state requirements.
  • Work closely with contractors, developers, architects, engineers, and the public; explain laws, codes, and regulations related to development and construction activities.
  • Gather field data for engineering designs and as-built information.
  • Adhere to standard safety practices and maintain a safe work site.

 

You Have:

  • Equivalent to completion of high school or GED and college-level coursework in engineering, drafting, or related area.
  • Three years of experience in construction, public works, or technical engineering preferred.
  • Familiarity with construction sites, including road, utilities, and general development construction.
  • Skill in maintaining accurate field inspection records, drawings, photos, and electronic records.
  • Knowledge of state and local laws, codes, and municipal construction regulations and standards.
  • Ability to work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Commitment to delivering excellent customer service and maintaining positive working relationships with staff and the public.
