We’re looking for a Chief Building Inspector to join our Community Development Department. As the Chief Building Inspector, you will perform technical inspections on a variety of commercial and residential projects, including building, plumbing, and mechanical inspections. You will enforce building codes, regulations, and ordinances, and oversee issuance of permits.

You will excel at communicating with developers, architects, contractors, and the public to ensure their understanding and adherence to code requirements. Working under the guidance of the Development Services manager, you also will lead other inspectors and building permitting technicians, promoting a collaborative and proactive workforce. Your skills in interpreting and explaining building inspection ordinances and regulations, preparing concise reports, and resolving problems related to code compliance will be important to your success in this role.

 

What You’ll Do in This Role:  

  • Inspect commercial and residential buildings during different stages of construction and remodeling, including building, plumbing and mechanical inspections; ensure compliance with applicable international building, plumbing, or mechanical codes, ordinances and regulations.
  • Inspect existing buildings and premises for change of use, occupancy, or compliance with applicable codes and ordinances.
  • Inspect foundation, concrete, steel, masonry, wood construction, framing, plastering, plumbing and a large variety of other complex and routine building system elements.
  • Issue violation notices; maintain records of history of facts for possible legal actions.
  • Perform plan checks of buildings and structures; ensure compliance with codes, ordinances and regulations; recommend modifications.
  • Assist at the front counter; confer with architects, contractors, builders and the general public; explain and interpret requirements and restrictions; calculate fees; issue permits.
  • Prepare building inspection reports; prepare legal forms and correspondence.
  • Maintain files and reports regarding the inspection of expired permits and plan check activities.
  • Issue stop work notices for non-conforming or unpermitted building activity; maintain stop work notice files.

 

You Have:

  • Equivalent to completion of High School or GED.
    1+ year of specialized training in the building trades, construction and/or code enforcement.
  • 5+ years of increasingly responsible experience in building inspection.
  • Must obtain International Code Council Certification.
  • Must maintain a valid Colorado driver’s license.
  • Knowledge of building related codes and ordinances enforced by the City.
  • Ability to plan, assign, and supervise the work of departmental employees.
  • Commitment to safety standards and methods of building construction for commercial and residential buildings.
