The Durango Police Department is seeking a Multimedia Specialist & Digital Evidence Technician to join our team. In this unique role, you will combine your expertise in detailed administrative work and record-keeping with effective communication, particularly in managing our social media presence. This position offers a great balance for someone who is both analytically minded and creatively driven, allowing for a varied and impactful career within our organization.

Under the general supervision of the Records Sergeant, you will be responsible for processing, cataloging, and storing digital evidence. This involves providing support for various digital evidence requests, including body-worn camera footage, closed-circuit television (CCTV) recordings, and 911 dispatch calls, ensuring sensitive information is redacted in compliance with privacy laws, departmental policies, and public records regulations.

You’ll dedicate the other fifty percent of your time to content creation. From crafting social media posts and press releases to video recruitment and training materials, your contributions will enhance our department’s transparency, public image, and engagement with the community.

What You’ll Do in This Role: 

Digital Evidence Review

  • Receive, document, process, and store digital evidence.  
  • Respond to and fulfill evidence requests, maintaining accuracy and adherence to legal and departmental standards.
  • Accurately redact video footage, audio recordings, and written reports for public dissemination.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records relating to property, evidence, and digital media files.
  • Perform general clerical duties, including data entry, filing, record keeping, and preparation of documents for public records requests.

Social Media & Communications

  • Develop and create social media and video productions for training and recruitment of law enforcement officers.
  • Work collaboratively with City departments in the creation and distribution of content for media campaigns and community outreach projects.
  • Handle daily distribution of law enforcement reports and occasional news releases to local media.
  • Write and edit press releases, department brochures, public service announcements, speeches, articles, and social media posts to report on new programs, department news, respond to inquiries, and make general announcements to the public.
  • Respond to social media questions and direct information to department entities in a timely manner.
  • Source video material for dissemination to the public, including generating and manipulating graphic images, animations, sound, text, and video into seamless multimedia programs.
  • Photograph service awards, special events, and ceremonies.

You Have: 

  • Equivalent to completion of high school or GED.
  • Two or more years of responsible administrative experience.
  • Social media background and/or professional media experience preferred.
  • Proficiency in principles of record keeping, data management, and the use of a wide range of computer programs, including database, records management, and redaction software for video, audio, and images.
  • Strong communications skill, both verbal and written, combined with excellent organizational skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Capacity to work independently and learn new procedures, such as radio and law enforcement call-taking processes.
