Salary: Our minimum teacher salary is $50,500. For candidates with prior experience and higher level degrees, pay increases based salary bands. For teachers with over 26 years of experience, there is no cap.

Purpose:  The Middle School Athletic Director is responsible for carrying out the mission of VMS through curriculum development, teaching, assessment, differentiation, classroom management, outdoor education, character development, and building rapport with students in and out of the classroom. As the Middle School Athletic Director this position will provide overall leadership, strategic direction and operational support for middle school sports. As a physical education teacher, they will also support the mission and philosophy of the school, value the VMS culture, and strive to make our school a better place. This is a 10 month faculty position.

  • While you are unable to be a varsity head coach, assistant coaching is available upon the approval and at the discretion of the Athletic Director.
  • Experienced in lower and middle school athletics through teaching and/or coaching
  • Preference for experience with athletic scheduling and logistical planning

What You Will Do:

  • Provide an instructional program for fifth through eighth grade PE that is relevant, challenging, and appropriate for the needs and abilities of Vail Mountain School students. You will also evaluate student progress in accordance with our assessment policies
  • Teach a once a week health seminar course in Middle School. This course will run for 3 of 4 quarters.
  • Provide safety instruction to students and establish standards of student behavior and academics to ensure a productive environment for physical education/athletics and to ensure the optimal condition and safety of all athletic equipment, facilities, fields, and courts
  • Provide general supervision of students at all times in the building (including lunch and recess)
  • Manage Middle School Athletics scheduling, hiring, coach management, and budgeting with the direction and assistance of the Athletic Director and Middle School Division Director.
  • Manage the Middle School Athletics portion of the overall Athletics Department budget.
  • Regularly attend athletic events that fall outside the school day
  • Work directly with the Athletic Director to determine weekly priorities and engage in on-going communication to ensure support to all athletic events
  • Coordinate with the Athletic Director, lower school division director, and middle school division director to ensure appropriate integration, scope, sequence, and articulation of curriculum.
  • Become a proficient user of the our existing technology systems to be effective in your athletic’s management
  • Collaborate with all colleagues to provide the best possible experience for our students and community members
  • Participate in orientation, field trips, hut trips, student activities, and Ski Days
  • Communicate with parents, athletes, and employees  with a collaborative attitude to ensure all needs are met
  • Support the school’s commitment to diversity, inclusion and belonging, and actively promote the school’s goals and culture in this regard.
  • Exhibit flexibility to determine your priorities on the fly. For example, you may determine that you should miss certain away games or practices to cover a different event that is understaffed.
  • Jump in to help when your team is in need. This might include covering classes, skiing or snowshoeing with students, hopping onto a field trip that needs to be covered
